As we already emphasized many times before, for our team one of the main goals is to create an immersive, living world for the Exoplanet’s story to take place in. We are working hard to give this world an unique atmospheric look and feel, to fill it with lots of important details and develop a deep lore. There are not only major elements of great importance involved in this thoughtful creative process like the history, geography and political map of the universe, it’s mythology and legendary personalities, but also smaller, quite common and trivial things which actually make the player to believe in this fictional world’s reality, continuity and coherence.
The main theme of Exoplanet’s story is the first contact between the two different cultures and the consequences of this controversial event. On the remote planet K’Tharsis technically advanced humans meet natives, who seems to be enjoying the bronze age for eternity. More than 100 years after this our hero experiences his own “first contact” with the strange society, build on of this hostile and mysterious Frontier planet.
What fruits of civilization can bring the Gold-Rush-obsessed colonists to the stick-in-the-mud natives of the K’Tharsis? Probably there will be a small number of scientists and colonial doctors, volunteers of the Interstellar Red Cross (similar to the modern one) or some missionaries (Space Thanshumanist Mormons? ) and simply goodhearted people who will try to help the “savages” unselfishly. But obviously their efforts won’t be enough to compensate the destructive influence of the ruthless majority, who landed on this planet with one single thought: “This is the new Antigravium El Dorado!”. The real history of Earth has many examples of the typical first contact situation: the obligatory things to export are weapons, drugs, diseases, extreme violence, slavery and new types of crime and antisocial activities. No doubt that the colonists will introduce the local inhabitants to the concept of unified earthen currency called terro and gambling.
The true Space Western world is unthinkable without robbers, snatching the heavy little sacks filled with platinum coins from the hands of the shocked bank officer, without the bad-ass bounty hunters, who are always ready to send to the great beyond the whole gang of desert raiders only for a fistful of terro. And don’t forget the elegant and extremely dangerous gentleman at the saloon’s table, who are testing their luck and some quite special skills with Galactic poker cards in his hands.
In the vast universe of Exoplanet the most developed and rich Core Worlds of Humanity will completely cease the standard cash money operations and create the interstellar electronic financial payment system to operate with their funds. Their inhabitants will enjoy all the profits of this united financial system. The enormous on-line shops, big brothers of our modern Amazon will deliver the most common and the most exotic wares to their customers in no time. Numerous gambling games like e.g. Castle Jackpot will be available to try one’s luck. All social and political events and commercial services – from pizza delivery to the President elections will occur in the global planetary and interstellar communication network.
No doubt that the certain smaller groups of citizens will keep the tradition of physical social interaction as a sign of their aristocratic origin and/or wealth. These powerful, rich and prominent people (and those gambling and betting addicts who desperately want to be like them) will definitely continue to visit the traditional temples of Fortune and take their time rolling the dice, sweating at the poker table and having their eyes fixed to the roulette. Viva Luna-Vegas which artificiality created macro-diamond domes are sparkling like a real jewels on the surface of the Moon!
The archaic attributes of luxury and elite status will be a common practice (in their form of course and not in the realization). The pioneers of the distant colonies and following generations of the colonists will have nothing to do with the global virtual networks and games. These unpopular in the rough reality of the human military outposts and industrial facilities, where people care more about how to produce enough food supplies or who’s turn is to go outside on the patrol or how to fix the damn power plant outside of the secure perimeter and not get eaten by local wildlife or killed by extreme weather effects, climate conditions, unknown virus or local bandits.
Simple entertainments and games will prosper in Frontier worlds again, more suitable to the local public’s lifestyle and habits. A free minute, crude dice or an old pack of cards and people willing to play is enough to have fun and get some extra coin. Speaking of coins: “physical” money will be resurrected in distant colonies, where the banks of the Core Worlds cannot guarantee the reliability of the “electronic” currency. Physical equivalent of terro will be coined from platinum and other rare metals to trade with locals and other alien races. The rarest pure antigravium crystals which could be found by prospectors could also be used to barter with the locals thinking of the gold sand that was serwing the same purpose during the Gold Rush on Earth. Robbers, gamblers, pickpockets and other individuals with special abilities will praise the heavens for this retro-style currency to be used in colonies.
In each saloon, cantina or other similar “cultural center” of the Exoplanet you will find for sure a company of different coats clenching in their fingers, tentacles or manipulators a set of cards. And if you look closely around, you will definitely notice the “one-armed bandit” or his futuristic grandson imposingly leaning at the wall and ready to rob you from all of your terro saved to buy a new pair of boots.
